“[The Canarys put on] a great showing in terms of the performances, the written content, and the bountiful sonic variety where the pair consistently mix it up in style, keeping it fresh as they effectively venture in various directions. A humble band that I implore everybody to give some attention” – Jason Small Small Music Scene
Canarys music sounds the way that oak looks when it’s burning. Marco and Alexander are middle class kids, raised by family mythology to question everything, thrown out into a crumbling world. They love vintage clothes, wooden furniture, and cluttered spaces. Their music searches for home, but it knows that most homes today are built on rotten foundations, barely functional relationships and power dynamics. True peace is hard to come by, and their music takes offense to that fact.
The Canarys are a DIY alt/indie power duo. Alexander Hollins, on guitar and vocals, pairs thoughtful lyrics with heavy emotional guitars, while Marco Saah plays huge driving and grooving drums inspired by hip-hop, R&B, and jazz. The combined sound is fierce and melodic while staying deep in the pocket. It’s Jack White and Queens of the Stone Age mixed with Kendrick Lamar, Lucky Daye, Snail Mail, Lucy Dacus, and Pixies.
Marco and Alexander have released an album and EP, both self-produced and mixed. Their music has been played on over 50 radio stations across the US and has been licensed by a number of television studios including Netflix and Discovery. They are currently booking their first US tour, and they are already working on their next EP.
The music grew from the practice rooms of Loyola University New Orleans. Alexander and Marco were both freshman Popular and Commercial Music students, learning from the sounds of the most musical city in the world. They originally wanted to be more than just a two-piece, but they clicked and realized that the music was at its best when it was being played by the two of them.
